Jason Shooting Half Dome

September 20th, 2005

Sunday morning before we left we decided to cruise up to the top of Glacier Point. Glacier Point has a spectacular view of the entire valley below, but is unfortunately overrun with tour buses, and the cargo they carry. There is a nice paved path area going out to the point complete with full bathroom and fully stocked gift shop. We made it out there, but only on our way down the mountain.

About a half mile before the parking lot we turned off the road and found a huge slab of granite jutting off down a hill with an unencumbered view of half dome and the surrounding areas. We stopped there for a few hours, and other than being able to see cars off in the distance winding around the road there was no one out there.

It’s hard to have any idea of the scale of the mountain as there’s no point of reference in the photograph other than other huge mountains, but take my word for it – it’s gigantic. At one point you could see what looked static, or wind or something on the tip of half dome, they were people. The people on the tip of half dome looked like cars on the highway as you’re coming in to land.
