Near Virginia City, NV

April 17th, 2006

In an effort to escape the constant rain that has been plaguing the bay area these past few months we took off for drier pastures. Specifically… Nevada. There wasn’t a total absence of rain, but all-in-all it was sparse and more sun than rain (and there were pastures).

I’ve never really seen much of Nevada: there were fields of tumbleweed bordered by snow-capped mountain ranges, ghost towns and dessert – well nearly dessert (we were too far north for the real deal). After Nevada there was a drive up through the mountains to Tahoe City. The Starbucks coffee purchased while in a t-shirt in Reno was still piping hot as the sides of the road turned to drifts of snow at least 10 feet tall. After breakfast on Lake Tahoe we were back to California for a rodeo in Auburn. The rain stayed away until we were back in San Francisco with a pot of chili simmering away on the stove.

After driving down a 16 mile dirt/gravel road we crossed the main road to go through the mountains to Virginia City, NV. Unfortunately all of the rain had caused 6 Mile Canyon Rd. to be closed just past the small community that borders the highway. This is where this photograph was taken, and this is what Nevada looked like most of this weekend.
